AND WE THOUGHT WE WERE FREE

Slowly but surely the fear driven Orwellian noose closes as our civil liberties and freedoms, which were once taken for granted, are gradually restricted or ended and always for the same reason ~ National Security and the never ending War on Terror: Allen L Roland

George Orwell's 1984 revealed that the key to social control is a never ending war, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and the so-called War on Terror; for it keeps the masses fearful, silenced and obedient while their freedom and civil liberties gradually vanish. And then we begin to see things like this ~

Suspect Everyone / We have almost reached a state of 1984 surveillance that treats everyone as a potential suspect.

30 Second Homeland Security Video The Drop Off - If You See Something, Say Something. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28872.htm

In that regard, as I watch the TSA security fiasco unfold as well as George W Bush and Dick Cheney’s recent book tours ~ where they rationalize their illegal wars and economic rape of Iraq and Afghanistan as well as justify torture as a means to this criminal end ~ I immediately think of Milton Mayer’s classic THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE (The Germans 1933 – 1945).

For German exceptional-ism in the 1930’s was really not too different, in many ways, than American exceptional-ism in the last decade and we are very likely headed for the same disastrous fate ~ particularly regarding fading civil rights and liberties and the real consequences of the recently renewed Patriot Act . (See "Are You a Terrorist?” Extra! 11-12/01, http://www.fair.org/extra/0111/usa-patriot.html.)

Excerpt:

“The legal definition of "terrorism" is crucial because the USA PATRIOT act gives law enforcement broad new powers to be used against "terrorist" individuals and groups. The American Civil Liberties Union (10/23/01) warns that this new definition will “sweep in people who engage in acts of political protest” if those acts could be deemed dangerous to human life. Actions which damage property or endanger people were already illegal~ reclassifying these offenses as “terrorist” while removing judicial checks on law enforcement is a recipe for the political prosecution of dissent.”

Let’s talk about our rapidly disappearing Civil Liberties and the fact that protecting individual rights and liberties has been at the very bottom of the totem pole for the Obama administration as it was with the Cheney/Bush administration. President Obama has blatantly not only failed to close Guantanamo Bay, as he promised, but has continued warrant less surveillance and military tribunals and still exercises his Bush inherited right to kill US citizens that he views as terrorists ~ as witness the recent drone assassination of American born US citizen Al Awlaki on September 30th in Yemen.

Please note that no effort was made to indict Al Awlaki for any crimes despite ( a report last October that the Obama administration was “considering” indicting him). Despite substantial doubt among Yemen experts about whether he even had any operational role in Al Qaeda, despite the fact that no evidence (as opposed to unverified government accusations) was presented of his guilt.

As such, this assassination of a US citizen is an act of intimidation (meant to send a message to the masses) and the fall out is always increased warnings and then a decrease in civil liberties and freedom. (Reuters) - The State Department issued a worldwide travel alert on Saturday warning of the possibility of anti-American attacks in response to the killing of two top al Qaeda members, including Al Awlaki.

Remember, this extrajudicial assassination of an American citizen was carried out by our Nobel Peace Prize winner ~ President Barack Obama. In that regard, Jonathan Turley, LA Times, feels that President Obama may be the most disastrous president in our history in terms of civil liberties;

Protecting individual rights and liberties - apart from the right to be tax-free - seems barely relevant to candidates or voters. One man is primarily responsible for the disappearance of civil liberties from the national debate, and he is Barack Obama. While many are reluctant to admit it, Obama has proved a disaster not just for specific civil liberties but the civil liberties cause in the United States… Soon after his election, various military and political figures reported that Obama reportedly promised Bush officials in private that no one would be investigated or prosecuted for torture. In his first year, Obama made good on that promise, announcing that no CIA employee would be prosecuted for torture. Later, his administration refused to prosecute any of the Bush officials responsible for ordering or justifying the program and embraced the "just following orders" defence for other officials, the very defence rejected by the United States at the Nuremberg trials after World War II.” Read the full article ~ http://readersupportednews.org/opinion2/275-42/7663-focus-obama-a-disaster-for-civil-liberties

But Turley makes the valid point that the seeming liberal indifference to Obama’s betrayal of civil rights and liberties could well be a classic case of the Stockholm Syndrome ~ in which the hostage bonds with his captor despite the obvious threat to his existence much as Germany once did to Hitler’s persona and fascism in the midst of an economic depression;

“Even though many Democrats admit in private that they are shocked by Obama's position on civil liberties, they are incapable of opposing him. Some insist that they are simply motivated by realism: A Republican would be worse. However, realism alone cannot explain the utter absence of a push for an alternative Democratic candidate or organized opposition to Obama's policies on civil liberties in Congress during his term. It looks more like a cult of personality. Obama's policies have become secondary to his persona.”

Mayer’s book describes the slow but sure seduction of the German people as their civil liberties, freedoms and moral values were gradually stripped away by Hitler’s fascist government while waving the flag of national security and patriotism.

Pg. 166 / 167 THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE

But Then It Was Too Late ~ "What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, little by little, to being governed by surprise; to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if the people could not understand it, it could not be released because of national security. And their sense of identification with Hitler, their trust in him, made it easier to widen this gap and reassured those who would otherwise have worried about it this separation of government from people, this widening of the gap, took place so gradually and so insensibly, each step disguised (perhaps not even intentionally) as a temporary emergency measure or associated with true patriotic allegiance or with real social purposes. And all the crises and reforms (real reforms, too) so occupied the people that they did not see the slow motion underneath, of the whole process of government growing remoter and remoter.”

Apathy increases with each measured step, as it most certainly has in America, and Mayer knowingly describes the consequences for Germany in the early 1930’s~

Pg 171 THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE

In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D ~ and one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush in upon you. The burden of self-deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident, in my case my little boy, hardly more than a baby, saying 'Jewish swine,' collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything, has changed and changed completely under your nose. The world you live in ~ your nation, your people ~ is not the world you were born in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays. But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed. Now you live in a world of hate and fear, and the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves; when everyone is transformed, no one is transformed. Now you live in a system which rules without responsibility even to God. The system itself could not have intended this in the beginning, but in order to sustain itself it was compelled to go all the way… You have accepted things you would not have accepted five years ago, a year ago, things that your father, even in Germany, could not have imagined Suddenly it all comes down, all at once. You see what you are, what you have done, or, more accurately, what you haven't done (for that was all that was required of most of us: that we do nothing).” Read article ~ http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/New_World_Order/TheyThoughtTheyWereFree.html

And that is Mayer’s main point ~ it is the spirit that dramatically changes when we accept if not condone the disintegration of our national moral values and civil liberties through illegal wars and occupations as well as our crimes against humanity such as torture, secret renditions as well as intrusive full body scans and pat downs, which will continue to be extended under the pretext of national security and the War on Terror.

Paul Craig Roberts correctly writes that the War on Terror is a Hoax; “In the past decade, Washington has killed, maimed, dislocated, and made widows and orphans millions of Muslims in six countries, all in the name of the “war on terror.” Washington’s attacks on the countries constitute naked aggression and impact primarily civilian populations and infrastructure and, thereby, constitutes war crimes under law. Nazis were executed precisely for what Washington is doing today.” http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article29273.htm

Then what was is the Obama/Biden administration so afraid of?

They are obviously afraid of the Truth and, in particular, an informed public in possession of the truth. And the truth is that we are owned, lock, stock, and barrel by Wall Street and the Corpocracy and Washington is in bed with them.

George Carlin said it in all in 2005 in his own x-rated way ~ 4 minute video http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/5075.html

And we thought we were free but, in reality, like the Germans in the 30’s, we are being manipulated and conditioned by fear to slowly give up our rights, liberties, guns and freedom ~ and all in the name of National Security and the never ending war on terror.

If you’re not deeply concerned, you’re not part of the revolution.

"What do we mean by the Revolution? The war? That was no part of the revolution; it was only an effect and consequence of it. The revolution was in the minds of the people, and this was effected from 1760 – 1775, in the course of fifteen years, before a drop of blood was shed at Lexington.” – John Adams, Letter to Thomas Jefferson, August 24, 1815

AFGHANISTAN / MYTHS AND FACTS REGARDING OBAMA'S WAR

President Obama in bomber jacket

The number one myth regarding Afghanistan is that we are fighting this so-called war to keep Americans safe. The ugly fact is that we are maintaining this expensive illegal occupation in order to politically promote President Obama’s image as a war time President who is tough on terrorists and thus ensure his re-election in 2012: Allen L Roland

The number two myth about Afghanistan is that this is a war against a virtually nonexistent al-Qaeda.

The fact is that this is a nine year illegal occupation which we continue to support and justify as the leading edge of the war on terror ~ which could not be further from the truth. The so-called war in Afghanistan is now the longest war in U.S. history, and 2010 has seen the highest number of U.S. and NATO soldiers killed.

The number three myth about Afghanistan is there has been significant progress in tamping down the insurgency in Afghanistan.

· The fact, courtesy of Juan Cole, ICH, ~ “ A recent National Intelligence Estimate by 16 intelligence agencies found no progress. It warned that large swathes of the country were at risk of falling to the Taliban and that they still had safe havens in Pakistan, with the Pakistani government complicit. The UN says there were over 6000 civilian casualties of war in Afghanistan in the first 10 months of 2010, a 20% increase over the same period in 2009. Also, 701 US and NATO troops have been killed this year, compared to 521 last year, a 25% increase. There were typically over 1000 insurgent attacks per month in Afghanistan this year, often twice as many per month as in 2009, recalling the guerrilla war in Iraq in 2005.” http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article27142.htm

The number four myth about Afghanistan is the US presence in Afghanistan is justified by the September 11 attacks.

· The fact is that in Helmand and Qandahar Provinces, a poll found that 92% of male residents had never heard of 9/11.

The number five myth about Afghanistan is Afghans still want US troops in their country, despite their discontents.

· The fact is one poll found that 55% of Afghans want the US out of their country. And, the percentage of Afghans who support Taliban attacks on NATO has grown from 9% in 2009 to 27% this year! Many Afghans regard the Taliban as freedom fighters! The insurgency is actually Afghans resisting their U.S. installed corrupt Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, as well the growing United States occupying force.

The final myth about Afghanistan is the United States is in Afghanistan to fight al-Qaeda.

· The fact, again courtesy of Juan Cole, is “CIA director Leon Panetta admitted that there are only 50-100 al-Qaeda operatives in Afghanistan! The US is mainly fighting two former allies among the Mujahidin whom Ronald Reagan dubbed “freedom fighters” and the “equivalent of America’s founding fathers:” Gulbaddin Hikmatyar and his Hizb-i Islami, and Jalaluddin Haqqani and his Haqqani Network. These two organizations, which received billions from the US congress to fight the Soviets in the 1980s, are more deadly and important now than the ‘Old Taliban’ of Mulla Omar. The point is that they are just manifestations of Pashtun Muslim nationalism, and not eternal enemies of the United States (being former allies and clients and all). Hikmatyar has roundly denounced al-Qaeda.”

So when you hear President Obama attempt to justify his illegal war and occupation of Afghanistan ~ please realize that this occupation is only serving one master ~ the Military Industrial Complex and Corpocracy and that President Obama answers to them and not you or me.

President Obama has escalated thus senseless occupation in Afghanistan, requesting the Congress hike defense spending next year by two percent to $708 billion and, adds Robert Reich, “including Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs, nuclear weapons, and intelligence, the total national security bill will push $950 billion.” That’s almost a trillion dollars, folks! Think about that as you watch your gas pump prices climb closer to $4.00 dollars a gallon ~ for billions of dollars are being spent on oil to fuel this out of control Obama war machine.

Afghanistan has rightfully been called the graveyard of empires and it most certainly will be the graveyard of America’s deeply flawed and over-extended empire when the truth replaces myths regarding Obama’s War. The United States has built a self-deluding narrative and myth of global domination which the world now not only rejects but actively opposes ~ in that regard, Afghanistan will be America’s waterloo. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that, between March and October 2010, the U.N. found that southern Afghanistan remained at "very high risk," while 16 districts were upgraded to "high risk." At the same time, Areas deemed "low risk" shrank considerably. The truth is obvious, we are losing badly and it’s time to stop the myths and spin from the Obama administration.

"The weakness of power is that when power is confronted by the authority of truth, it is no match for the power of weakness that bears the mark of truth." Paul Lehman

Memorial Day 2010 / War Is An Old Recycled Lie

MEMORIAL DAY 2010 / WAR IS AN OLD RECYCLED LIE

[ Click on picture to enlarge ]

Three dead Americans in Afghanistan ~ why ?

War is a waste so why do we celebrate it with parades, flags and glorious war stories when, in reality, they are fought by our youth who are but pawns in the hands of old men ~ seduced by power and greed ~ who are more than willing to waste our most precious resource on illegal wars and occupations : Allen L Roland

The aspect of control and domination is a precipitating factor in all wars, and it is also the the principle aspect of ego consciousness ~ which is directly contradictory to our innate propensity to unite and cooperate, which are the principle aspects of soul consciousness and the
Unified Field .

On this Memorial Day 2010, America is still enmeshed in a costly and illegal war and occupation of Iraq, rapidly increasing its military presence in illegally occupied Afghanistan and preparing for the possibility of war with Iran. American defense secretary Gates told NBC television last year that the president had instructed him to refresh plans for military action against Tehran ~ prepared during the Bush era.
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/1,7340,L-3720065,00.html

The American War Wagon has not slowed down in 2010 but is accelerating ~ with little if any deep reflection on the true human and moral cost of this insanity.

War is almost always waged for corporate profits and political gains ~ soldiers and their families pay the costs. ( Read War is a Racket by Major General Smedley Butler.)

On this Memorial Day, much of the media will roll over backwards to glorify war and all the soldiers slaughtered in wars. Tributes to the dead are easy; the dead don't talk back and if they did they would most certainly say ~ why ?

To save your world you asked this man to die; Would this man, could he see you now, ask why ?: W. H. Auden: "Epitaph for an Unknown Soldier"

Kristina M. Gronquist calls it the OLD LIE ~ Dulce et decorum est - Pro patria mori ( To die for one’s country is sweet and becoming )

It's from the poem “Dulce et decorum est” by the English poet Wilfred Owen, 1893 -1918, killed at the front a few days before the Armistice and nothing could be further from the truth.

Here's an excerpt from Gronquist's timeless article written on Memorial Day 2005 ~ " The media will continue, this weekend, to suppress the truth, which is that the war in Iraq is a massive foreign policy failure; Iraq is a failed state, an incredibly chaotic unstable mess where tens of thousands of Iraqis have died needlessly. Unworried Americans will say we can’t judge Iraq yet, we have to “wait and see,” because down the road, if oil rich Iraq becomes a (Western-style) democracy “it will all be worth it”. These are such easy words to utter, from the armchair experts on democracy for Muslims, so smug with remote controls in-hand. Yes, tell the loved ones of one million dead Iraqis that someday the deaths of their family members will all be worth it, as your own children scurry about safe and warm... On Memorial Day we will blithely ignore the massive protest and hatred that our polices, occupations, torture and wrongful imprisonment have inspired in the Muslim and Arab world. Come to think of it, many Europeans, Latin Americans and Africans aren’t enthralled with our foreign policies either. But an empire can ignore the common sense of the global masses of people who oppose war, and we can easily choose not to try to understand root causes of anti-American sentiment. C’mon - America, it’s Memorial Day, tune that negative reality out and turn on your television for yet another glorious war hero story." http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article8970.htm

On May 30, 2010, the direct cost of occupying Iraq and Afghanistan hit $1 trillion. In a few weeks, the House of Representatives will be asked to vote for $33 billion of additional "emergency" supplemental spending to continue the illegal occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.
We must now face the hard cold reality that War is an insurmountable human waste and an old recycled lie ~ not a cause for glorification and celebration ~ and then demand action from our political leaders to end this waste by no longer funding our foreign wars and occupations.

Mohandas Gandhi said it best ~ What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction of war is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or in the holy name of liberty and democracy?

The Prince Of Peace In His Bomber Jacket

THE PRINCE OF PEACE IN HIS BOMBER JACKET

The prince of peace, Barack Obama poses in occupied Afghanistan for his obligatory warrior photo ~ dressed in his bomber jacket which fully reveals the hypocrisy of his recent and deeply tainted Nobel Peace prize : Allen L Roland

As Holy Week unfolds in 2010 ~ we have the twin spectacles of the Vicar of Christ, Pope Benedict XVI, deservedly under attack for obstruction of justice while the Prince of Peace, Nobel Peace prize winner President Barack Obama, visiting illegally occupied Afghanistan in the dead of night for an on the run Photo Op with the troops ~ while posing in his macho bomber jacket. In essence, it was a six hour pro-war pep rally !

All we need is a Mission Accomplished Banner behind Obama to replicate the hypocrisy of the GW Bush Photo Op on May 1, 2003 on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln where Bush declared that the Iraq war, which was also an illegal occupation, was over.

This Obama photo is a statement to America, and the world, that Obama is a war president and you better get used to it. Obama sold out to the Military / Industrial complex a long time ago ~ and, as a result, we'll be in Afghanistan for many years to come.

Those were Obama's exact words by the way ~ He assured his listeners, and most assuredly Americans at home, that we will “finish the job” and made another promise as well: “I’m looking forward,” he told the troops, “to returning to Afghanistan many times in the years to come.”

Machiavelli, The Prince, ch. IX, fully describes our current Prince Obama ~ " For in every city these two opposite parties [people vs aristocracy] are to be found, arising from the desire of the populace to avoid oppression of the great, and the desire of the great to command and oppress the people....For when the nobility see that they are unable to resist the people, they unite in exalting one of their number and creating him prince, so as to be able to carry out their own designs under the shadow of his authority."

As Norman Soloman writes in Common Dreams " President Obama has taken a further plunge into the kind of war abyss that consumed predecessors named Johnson, Nixon and Bush. "

The Afghanistan and Iraq wars ($1 trillion so far), will cost $200-250 billion more this year, including hidden and indirect expenses. Obama’s Afghan “surge” of 30,000 new troops will cost an additional $33 billion ~ which is more than Germany’s total defense budget.

Commander in Chief Obama is paying for America’s wars through supplemental authorizations by utilizing America's maxed-out credit card. Future generations will be stuck with this bill to the tune of what is now over $30,000 dollars per American.

In other words, If Americans actually had to pay for these wars and occupations through a war tax ~ and not on credit ~ both of these conflicts would now be over.

As Daniel Ellsberg said ~ "The only way the Vietnam War could have been ended was by Congress cutting off the money " and he was absolutely correct !

President Obama now has HIS war in Afghanistan and his Bomber Jacket ~ but we can stop this War President nonsense by defunding these senseless occupations and make it our peace cry for the midterm elections in November, 2010.
