DEATH OF A LION / HUGO CHAVEZ 1954 - 2013

Larger than life and now larger than death ~ Hugo Chavez will not be forgotten. His permanently displayed embalmed body will be a constant reminder of his righteous indignation of the imperialistic West and our illegal wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as his empowering commitment to the Latin American poor and disenfranchised which even extended to the United States: Allen L Roland

"Like Bolívar, Chávez swore to break the chains binding Latin Americans to the will of the mighty. Within his lifetime, the ties of dependency and indirect empire have loosened" Oscar Guardiola-Rivera

Every lifetime personalities emerge whose personality, presence and commitment transcend politics and they stand alone at the pinnacle of human achievement. Nelson Mandela is one of these people as is Martin Luther King Jr but the irrepressible Hugo Chavez also belongs on that same world stage. Who can forget Chavez rightfully calling the Cheney/Bush administration the devil from the podium of the UN on September 20, 2006. Every word he spoke denouncing American intentions and imperialistic ambitions, to the enjoyment of many in the UN audience, was true ~ for seven years later American imperialism and exceptionalism is dying in the graveyard of Empires, Afghanistan. Three minute UN Chavez speech ~

As Chris Nineham correctly concludes in ICH ~ "Chavez put to shame all the so-called progressive leaders around the world who hide behind fabricated public opinion to justify embracing the market and moving to the right. He proved that radical policies work and win support. He showed that defiance of US imperialism is possible and popular. He will be missed in every corner of the globe." See article ~ http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article34216.htm

He will be missed but not forgotten, as another nemesis to neoliberalism, British MP George Galloway, articulates on the death of Chavez during a recent interview ~ along with Republican congressman Luke Messer, who airily dismissed Chavez as an unimportant tyrant and despot and in the process revealed the moral shallowness of our political arena. Note the disparity of their views in this excellent 8 minute video interview ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0rojYMx5c4

Above all, Hugo Chavez was a man of the people and had a fondness for the south Bronx of New York. On one of his trips to the UN, Representative José E. Serrano, a Democrat from the South Bronx, invited him to the neighborhood. As Frances Robles writes in the New York Times ~ " Mr. Chávez, the congressman said, made it clear he did not want to visit “power brokers.”  Instead, he spent several hours one September morning greeting local leaders at a community development corporation, where tables were set up and various groups distributed brochures as if the event were a college fair at a high school.
Mr. Chávez stopped to chat with neighborhood advocates one by one, several people recalled, impressing everyone with his uncanny ability to recall obscure historical facts about each person’s home country… We expected, honestly, for him to walk through, say a few words and leave,” Mr. Serrano said. “Three and a half hours later, he was still there. ‘What’s the name of your organization? What do they do? How are you funded? Why did you name it that?’ He did this table by table by table. Then he would quote a poet, artist, politician or historical figure from Panama, Mexico, the Dominican Republic or wherever the person was from.”  He left people with the impression that he had looked at the South Bronx, saw the slums of Caracas and fell in love with the place. He ended the morning dancing with a straw hat perched on his head. Out of that visit was born a community-relations program that would donate $5 million to grass-roots groups in the South Bronx, paying for a variety of projects, including the restoration of the Bronx River, after-school classes, literacy programs and food cooperatives." See article ~ http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/07/nyregion/in-the-south-bronx-memories-of-chavez-and-his-largess.html?emc=eta1

President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, who died this week, playing percussion on the guira with Omar Freilla of the band Palol Monte during a visit to the South Bronx in 2005.

“Here was a guy who the corporate media tried to push us to dislike by saying, ‘This guy is trying to empower himself forever,’ ” said Julio Pabon, a City Council candidate who participated in a Citgo-financed food co-op. “That’s not how we saw him in the Bronx. In the Bronx, he was a guy who came here and talked about helping people so they didn’t get strung out trying to pay their heating bills.”
Here's some of Chavez's most colorful quotes which endeared him to many, including myself, for indeed he was a fearless revolutionary and truth teller in a time of worldwide apathy and deception;
“Remember, little girl, I’m like the thorn tree that flowers on the plain. I want my scent to passers-by and prick he who shakes me. Don’t mess with me, Condoleezza. Don’t mess with me, girl.” — Chávez, to then U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in 2006

“A building never collapses like that, unless it’s with an implosion.” Chavez in 2006 reacting to a television report investigating a theory that the U.S. government was behind the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers
“Go right to hell.” “You are a pawn of imperialism.” To British Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2006

“He is a donkey.” “Hitler would be like a suckling baby next to George W. Bush.” On former president George W. Bush, 2006

Chavez was right on many counts and particularly on Bush and Iraq. "There were never weapons of mass destruction but Iraq was bombed, and over U.N. objections, (it was) occupied and continues being occupied," Chavez said. Bush alleged that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction but none have been found, shattering one of his main arguments for going to war. That's why we propose to this assembly that the United Nations leave this country (USA), which is not respectful of the very resolutions of this assembly," Chavez said.

As we come up to the 10th anniversary of the Cheney/Bush illegal attack on Iraq ~ history will show that it was indeed the worst mistake in U.S. history. Peter Van Buren elaborates on this mistake ~   "I was there. And “there” was nowhere. And nowhere was the place to be if you wanted to see the signs of end times for the American Empire up close. I stood at Ground Zero of what was intended to be the new centerpiece for a Pax Americana in the Greater Middle East. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the invasion of Iraq turned out to be a joke…In case you want to jump to the punch line, though, it’s this: by invading Iraq, the U.S. did more to destabilize the Middle East than we could possibly have imagined at the time. And we -- and so many others -- will pay the price for it for a long, long time."  See article  www.tomdispatch.com/blog/175658/

The lion may be lying in state but the truth still lives, the revolution will continue on and there will be other lions who will carry the banner of nonviolent progressive social change and South America's regional integration.

FALLING THROUGH THE RABBIT HOLE OF LOVE AND INTO THE LIGHT

Image from paulehendricks.com

Falling in love is literally falling through a rabbit hole to another state of consciousness ~ a state of light and soul consciousness deepest within ourselves which we initially attempt  to externalize and eventually must painfully internalize in order to assume our place in a universal loving plan in action: Allen L Roland

Falling in love is the first step toward experiencing the divine light and a state of soul consciousness deepest within ourselves and no one describes the feeling more vividly than the famous Persian poet, Rumi ~

"This is love: to fly toward a secret sky,
to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment.
First to let go of life.
Finally, to take a step without feet."
  Rumi

But Rumi also apparently sensed that love was a force beyond time and space and its roots were in the unseen world of soul consciousness and, I would add, the Unified Field ~ a state of consciousness that exists not only beyond time and space but also deepest within ourselves and whose principal property is the propensity to unite.

"Everything you see has its roots in the unseen world.
The forms may change, yet the essence remains the same.
Every wonderful sight will vanish, every sweet word will fade,
But do not be disheartened,
The source they come from is eternal, growing,
Branching out, giving new life and new joy.
Why do you weep?
The source is within you
And this whole world is springing up from it."
Rumi

Without a doubt, the most important initial step in my journey to experience and know this same truth was falling in love ~ for indeed I fell through a rabbit hole to a whole new dimension of feeling, seeing and knowing.

Of course, I initially externalized that love and when that idealized love was shattered by the reality of my marital situation ~ I could either run away from the resultant deep psychic pain or do what I actually did ~ accept, connect and surrender to the pain realizing that I would be haunted forever by the heights of that joy unless I faced and sank into the uncharted waters of the psychic well of grief I was then encountering. David Whyte expressed it perfectly in his poem The Well of Grief ~

"Those who will not slip beneath
the still surface on the well of grief

turning downward through its black water
to the place we cannot breathe

will never know the source from which we drink,
the secret water, cold and clear,

nor find in the darkness glimmering
the small round coins
thrown by those who wished for something else."

Some part of me sensed that there was a sad and alone child within me who always wanted to feel that deeply and I could not go any further until I also embraced his deep pain as I had once fully embraced his incredible joy.

I had surrendered to his delight and now it was time to surrender to his pain ~ trusting that beneath that well of grief was not only joy but also my true authentic self and my heart centered destiny.

From that deep and egoless state of apparent death and aloneness ~ I fully surrendered and embraced my true self and very rapidly my dreams became my guide to this new world of light and soul consciousness, that existed beyond time and space, as well as the startling realization that I was beginning to see through different eyes ~

I dreamed I was going to write a book entitled CONSCIOUS LOVE, THE ULTIMATE ENERGY ~ which three years later in 1975 became my Master's Thesis and the last 38 years have been spent proving it in my heart centered work as a therapist which culminated in my PHD dissertation on the Unified Field in 1998 and then the publishing of it in the form of my latest book in 2000 ~ RADICAL THERAPY / Surrender to Love and Heal Yourself in Seven Sessions ( Not Seven Years ).

This book is read by all my clients as well as the more than 65 combat vets with PTSD in the eleven Healing The Wounded Heart workshops I have facilitated over the past three years. Surrendering to love is also why my clients begin healing themselves in only seven sessions and why there has been an average 55 to 60% improvement in all symptoms of PTSD in my Band of Brothers 8 week PTSD groups ~ particularly feelings of Inner Peace, joy, love and gratefulness.

Despite the obvious success of a heart centered approach to working with combat veterans with PTSD, along with the rising rate of veterans suicide (now 22 a day) ~ it's politics as usual for the VA who still refuse to sanction a heart centered approach to Combat Vet care and remain in the structured box of drug and symptom oriented programs while its top General calls for alternative approaches. See  http://www.veteranstoday.com/2011/07/05/armys-top-brass-acknowledge-need-alternative-ptsd-vet-care/

I am now quite conscious of the fact that I am seeing through the heart while doing my heart centered work and living in a Unified Field of love, light, joy and soul consciousness ~  the same field that Rumi so eloquently wrote of;

"Out beyond ideas of wrong doing and right doing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
doesn't make any sense."

Rumi

Combat veterans of all ages, seniors and youth all want to be seen through the heart and they all respond when we share our truth and speak from our heart . As an example, here's a short email note from a member of the Orange county Life after Life club, where I made a two hour presentation on my heart centered work this past Saturday.

Dear Allen,
Our souls saw each other yesterday.  I knew I knew you.  I needed to be there and I needed to be in the front row.  I am frequently invisible, but you saw me.  I had waves of heart energy during your presentation, and when you quoted William Blake my heart gave a leap!  His words became clearer.  I am returning to the light and BECOMING my true self, excavating, tunneling out from underneath the pain and artifice, the defensive armor in which to hide.
I am listening to Caroline Myss and Andrew Harvey, "Divine Rebels, Saints, Mystics, Holy Change Agents-and You".  Your work enmeshes with theirs and sparked a deeper understanding.
I am beginning to see the strands of evolution in me, the healing from psychic despair that will ripple out from me to help heal the WEB of the ALL.  This is my preparation time, for what, I do not know, but I do know I am gathering strength and courage to say YES when it presents.
I too, have felt that this is my last go round on this plane.  I have no idea how or why I know this, but the KNOWING is very strong and I am becoming Brave enough to BELIEVE that I am worthy enough to know this.
Thank you for saying "YES".  Thank you for the courage to present your truth.  You have unlocked the treasure chest and my soul is in joy.
In deep gratitude for your Divine Light,
Kate Hennessy

So falling through the rabbit hole of love led eventually not only to my true self and a state of love, light, joy and soul consciousness deepest within me but also to a place of service and the deep realization that I am part of a loving plan in action ~ an evolutionary process with which we all participate as co-creators, if we will but listen, respond and share our truth regardless of the risks.
